  1. Stacy is Reading

From the moment I opened this book and dived in I knew I was in for an extremely special ride. The writing wove an engaging spell around honest and raw themes with a story that pulled me head first into a dystopian world in unsettling times.

London in 2047 is painted in a completely different light. But as the book suggests, the rapid rate in which technology is developing means it is not a future far from belief. From the outset we meet eighteen year old Gracie and our story follows her trials and tribulations in this unsettling future world. Straight away the narrative themes are vivid and real but far from hitting you in a garish light they thread the story together in a unique and clever manner. Mental health plays a huge role in Gracie’s plight, bringing elements of schizophrenia and psychosis to light in an unapologetic and honest fashion which is to be applauded. The sophisticated handling of this topic was brave and true but didn’t deflect from an already fascinating tale.

I don’t want to dive into details regarding the plot as to do so would no doubt give away hints and spoilers and I feel the best way to soak up this unique book is to let the story unfold in the way the author intends you to. Gracie’s journey will have you enraptured with each turn of the page and will leave you wanting more. I can’t wait to get my hands on book two already which says it all for the skillful writing style of Hazel Clarke.

Nightmare Scenario is a raw and honest tale of life and love that will leave you desperate for more. I was hooked to each and every word and I can’t praise this clever creation enough.

  2. The Book Magnet

Wow! Just WOW! I abso-blooming-lutely loved this book! Hazel Clarke takes the reader on quite a scary ride in her inventive, imaginative, thought provoking and scarily realistic debut. A cross between The Hunger Games and 1984, Nightmare Scenario is set to be an absolute classic. It is such a stunning, visionary book and I am totally gobsmacked that Hazel Clarke wrote this when she was 19 years old. I’m a little torn between wanting to find out what happens next and leaving it at its pretty perfect ending, but who am I kidding? I will definitely be first in the queue for Book 2. A very highly recommended read, even if it’s not a book you would usually pick up.

This is a very interesting book, it’s a young adult, yes, but it’s much more deeper than some adult books I’ve read!
It was not difficult to feel attracted to Gracie’s world, the story is centered in London on 2047, where technology controls everything, really it was not difficult imagining that could perfectly be our future; let’s be honest, a really scary one. There’s a point where we should ask ourselves if we control technology or technology is controlling us…

But this was not the important part of the story but mental health; it’s talked with a respectful way and making the reader feel the same as the characters, it was deep and emotional. I really like how step by step mental health is stopping being a tabu and it’s been included within the books theme, because it’s not easy to talk or to ask for help if everyone is scared of it. Schizophenia is a really scaring illness, difficult for the one that suffers it and the people surrounding them, not easy to control and always on the edge.

Like most of the mental illness there’s no cure and the only way to control them is with heavy medication, but it’s time no one has to hide about their illness. This is something you can’t control and it’s time no one has to hide, no matter their illness, don’t you think?

I am sure you’ll enjoy this read, there’s a little bit of romance too, but I will not tell you anything more, enjoy the read without spoilers!

This book is such a breath of fresh air! Its a YA book set in a dystopian world, it is a love story that focuses on mental health. I really loved it and I think you would to! This book deals with schizophrenia and psychosis. These issues are dealt with beautifully and frankly. There is a beautiful love story between Gracie and another character who I won’t name. This book also talks about how technology is taking over the world and if it’s a good or bad thing?

This is the start of a series of books and I can’t wait to read the next one!

I rated this book 4/5 stars!

I think the above blurb provides a good overview of Nightmare Scenario‘s story without introducing spoilers. So I’m going to use this space to discuss the two major themes in the book instead.

  5. Tales of a Literary Addict

Do you ever hear voices in your head? Nightmare Scenario sees Gracie Thrace completing a number of scenarios that are the stuff of nightmares. Three voices, daily tasks, are we hearing a case of Schizophrenia or are they real voices?

I wish I could write now at the age of 27 let alone at 19! Clarke has a fantastic way of walking you straight into the lives of her characters, making you sympathise and then pulling the rug out from underneath you. I mean this as the biggest compliment. There’s a level of confusion as the reader attempts to determine whether the voices are manifestations of mental health issues or reality. Then the story ends in the most dramatic fashion that leads you to need the next book immediately. I really enjoyed this.

  6. Readers Enjoy Authors’ Dreams

As soon as I started this book, I knew I was in for a special ride. This is one of them books that takes you by the hand and tells you to run. I think the synopsis provides a great overview of the Nightmare Scenario without introducing spoilers. Hazel’s writing constructs an engaging honest and raw story that envelops you in her dystopian world and through the unsettling times. Without spoilers, the first and most important theme is mental health and the second major theme deals with is the development of technology. Both themes are dealt with beautifully and respectfully especially the metal health theme it was deep and emotional and you easily felt a connection to the main character.

Wow. I loved this book. I started it and struggled to get really into it, but once I got past the 50 page mark, I could not put it down.

The representation of mental health as it shows the main character, Gracie, suffering with schizophrenia and psychosis, is so important and highlights the harsh reality. Whenever I read books with mental health I always worry they’re going to be glamourised and this book although wasn’t completely accurate (although it’s not going to be) managed to not make it seem ‘cool’ or glamourise the idea of psychosis.

I enjoyed the love story between Gracie and Kai, and I loved how it ended, keeping it open for the sequel.
One criticism I had of this book is how many SUBJECTS it involves. There was the mental health element, the romance and a sci-fi element. I did find all the different aspects a bit overwhelming and I did get confused at a. Couple of points.

Overall, however, I really enjoyed this book. I ended giving it 4/5 stars which is quite a high rating.

  8. The Writing Garnet

If I had to pick just one book that was so far out of my comfort zone it would need it’s own postcode and Visa, it would be Hazel Clarke’s ‘Nightmare Scenario’ without a doubt.

I dont usually read dystopian, futuristic novels, in fact I usually avoid them. However, when this book was brought to my attention, I couldnt turn it away in fear that I was missing out on something rather special.

You know what? I was right to not turn ‘Nightmare Scenario’ away – what a cleverly crafted, powerful and memorable novel this is! I mean, the storyline goes against anything I would usually put together in one book, yet it works! You’ve got the fantasy and futuristic vibe mixed with romance, mental health, and the minds of young adults.

Without giving too much away, the delivery of the mental health elements was very well written and incredibly poignant. I also thought that the idea of facing fears was such an important message to convey, and it was done without the usual peer pressure aspect that usually follows young adults.

All in all, a unique, cleverly written storyline from an author who has an older head on young shoulders – very impressed!

  9. Joyful Antidotes

The first and most important theme is mental health. Nightmare Scenario does a wonderful job opening up the conversation on schizophrenia and psychosis. They are dealt with beautifully and respectfully. As the author has psychosis herself, she is able to truly write about the effect mental illness has on everyday life and how people are afraid to open up about it.

The second major theme Nightmare Scenario deals with is the development of technology. Will future technology make our lives better or worse? I guess this is not a new topic for the dystopian genre or any other for that matter. That doesn’t make the topic any less disturbing though – made even more so by an author who is able to write about it in a way that will chill you.

What else does Nightmare Scenario offer? A lot, really. We have the makings of a wonderful love story between Gracie and a person whose name I will not mention now to avoid spoilers. We also have someone to root for in Gracie. She is a nice person, a really good friend, and someone you really want to win. And finally, we have the start of a wonderful new book series (in all honesty, just by reading the first few chapters of this book I knew it would be a series. It is not drawn out but the ending is a little rushed).
